Silo City Workshop

Silo City

Mark Maio is a colleague of mine, who has been intrigued by silos for years and has quite an extensive portfolio of them.

All six acres of the Buffalo River’s Silo City is owned by Rick Smith, who hopes to convert the compound into a multipurpose facility for the arts, entertainment, design and industrial heritage.

Silo City compound

There are a number of abandoned elevators, rich in architectural history and industrial design, and the perfect place to hold a workshop on shooting this type building.

Thus the inception of the “Silo City Workshop”, to be held on May 16, 2013 in Buffalo, NY.  To find out more information, or register for the event, visit this link:

Pantone and Food Pairings

Pantone and Food Pairings

David Schwen created a fun project for his Instagram page called Pantone Pairings. Pantone is a system for matching colors, used in specifying printing inks.  You might recall that I wrote a blog post a couple of months ago about Pantone choosing the color of the year, Emerald Green.   What a unique and […]

Street Food Revolution

Street Food Revolution

This month’s infographic post is on the skyrocketing street food trend.  Even though it’s part of my business to know about food trends, I was surprised by some of the information gathered by the clever folks atThe Food People in Chichester, southern England.  For instance, the #1 country for searching the term “street […]

The many meanings of symbolism

The many meanings of symbolism

I recently sent out my quarterly promo piece, this one highlighting my travel photography.  The images were taken in Vietnam, during a recent trip, and I hoped to transport the viewer, even if only visually, 8,000 miles away.   I learned many things during my trip and met wonderful people that moved me in […]

Best Business Practices for Photographers

Best Business Practices for Photographers

As a photographer, it is crucial that one protects their artistic work.  I have recently had to look back on some images that I filed for copyright protection with the Library of Congress, so it’s on the top of my mind these days. I understand how daunting and valuable this process can be.  For photographers […]

Some museums are taking a page from Ivan Day’s book and having more success in getting patrons to visit their period rooms.        Mr. Day, a former botanist turned food historian/curator, has had great success when working with museums to help them capitalize on the public’s growing interest in all facets […]

Bill Brandt at the NY Museum of Modern Art, my fish porter cousin...and a guest blogger!

Bill Brandt at the NY Museum of Modern Art, my fish porter cousin...and a guest blogger!

Iconic photographer Bill Brandt has a new exhibition by curator Sarah Hermanson Meister at the New York Museum of Modern Art called “Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light.”  While I could wax poetic about Mr. Brandt’s use of composition and light for most of the 1900s, I’m actually more excited to showcase one of his […]

Functional Chocolate?

Functional Chocolate?

There is a growing public captivation between food and art, and here’s an interesting twist on this: a lampshade made of chocolate!       Artist Alexander Lervik created a chocolate lamp, and unveiled it during Stockholm Design Week.  He was interested in exploring the idea of light, and darkness.  Ultimately he created a […]

An homage to butcher shops!

An homage to butcher shops!

Ashton Kutcher’s Thrash Lab has created an homage to the craft of butchery, and has filmed three Bay Area butcher shops for “The Subculture of Butchers”. The video artistically highlights the revival of the butchery renaissance.      One butcher shop that I absolutely adore is called the Fatted Calf, also located in San […]

Pantone names color of the year!

Pantone names color of the year!

Pantone recently released it’s annual “color of the year”…and the color is Pantone 17-5641.  What is unusual about this year’s color is that for the first time in the 14 year history of naming colors, Pantone felt it necessary to give 17-5641 a real name: Emerald Green.               […]

A Deeper Look for Better Results

A Deeper Look for Better Results

Each January millions of Americans look at their lives over the last year, and try to emulate what worked, and maybe look to other avenues for improving what could be better.  While there is a tradition for this annual self-inspection, the truth is that we could all take time for a check-in when it’s […]

Emergency Procedures for Art

The Museum of Modern art in New York has released a pdf manual on how to take care of art in the event of disaster.  While this is obviously timely for victims of Hurricane Sandy, it's a useful tool for all museums and galleries in the event of an impending natural disaster.   To […]
